Suicide warning signs
If you notice these in someone you love, ask directly. Asking does not plant the idea; it opens the door.
- Social withdrawal
- Extreme mood swings
- Giving away possessions
- Talking about being a burden
- Increased substance use
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Saying goodbye to people
- Sudden calm after a deep low

How to help someone
Ask plainly. "Are you thinking about suicide?" is a fair question between people who care about each other.
Listen without fixing. Do not argue them out of their feelings. Stay in the room with them.
Reduce access to means. Distance and time save lives.
Stay connected. Follow up tomorrow, and the day after. Being remembered is part of the treatment.
